Abstract:
This paper examines the extent and nature of stable racial integration in American neighborhoods. The author states that while some believe racial integration is rare, it is in fact common, with almost one-fifth of neighborhoods presently integrated. The author also indicates that such integration is growing and that the neighborhoods are remaining integrated over time. The paper discusses how integrated neighborhoods remain stable, primarily because homebuyers focus on the structural strength the neighborhood (the location of schools, crime rates, and property values) rather than racial makeup. The final chapter of the dissertation explores the implications of policies used to promote integration. Includes tables.
